Salt of the Earth is a multidisciplinary initiative bringing storytelling and science together to raise awareness of, and restore, the world’s overlooked ecosystems.
Saltmarshes are our first focus. Salt of the Earth is the first cultural organisation to be recognised as a core delivery partner for a UN Breakthrough, working alongside the UN Saltmarsh Breakthrough to protect and restore saltmarshes worldwide.
Global and local, together.
This is at the heart of our mission. Everything we do is rooted in particular places and in the people who live alongside them, and everything we do connects those places to the world.
We work with local communities and researchers to tell hopeful stories about our shared future with nature, grounded in lived experience, culture and science.
We then carry those stories, and the evidence behind them, onto the global stage: to international audiences, to the global network of scientists, and into the rooms where decisions are made. The local and the global meet in every part of our work.

"A liminal blend of salt and fresh water on the edge of the Adriatic Sea, the Venetian lagoon exudes an uncanny, ancient stillness. Even today, if you take a boat out at dawn, its salt marshes can feel prehistoric. Yet this morning women are moving gracefully through the eerie wetlands that are one of our most precious environmental resources…Entwined with their oasis, one group..pause to look behind them. Resembling architectural columns, their stance suggests both longing and determination. It is as if they are imprinting the scene on to their mind’s eye for transmission to future generations.. the film just described is only one element of Salt of the Earth, which also encompasses an installation, a choral piece and a performance."
